"OMG! Have you weighed yourself?" Aggie had one hand over her grinning mouth.
Rails looked up from the delicate job of foot care in 10% gravity. "I must admit, I have sort of stopped watching my weight."
"I'm 13 pounds!"
"That means 130 or so, I think." Rails bent down to her toes to hide her smile. "Maybe 140, I can't remember how much downforce the rotation gives us."
Aggie's smile evaporated. "You're just saying that to hurt my feelings."
"I am, I really am. Did it work?" Lori was attempting to get her head below her knee to look at the quick of the nail.
"I think so. I feel all bloated and stuff all of a sudden."
Lori Railsback smiled happily. "I have that effect on women."
"So I've noticed." Aggie stuck her tongue out at Lori's reflection in the mirror.
"I checked Hinson out through her physical today, I told her she was down to 142." Lori giggled.
"120 pound Melanie Hinson?"
"Yeah, black haired chick from Battle's office?" Lori snipped her cuticle, handled it badly and it bled. "Ow. Crap. I find low G plays havoc with all my body systems."
Aggie emerged from the bathroom with her ego more or less intact. "Except your period. Menstrual periods weigh the same as they did on Earth."
Lori laughed. "Yeah, mine hasn't come around yet."
"Pregnant?"
Lori snorted. "From what? Immaculate conception? The nearer my god to thee the more pregnant I get?"
Aggie laughed. "I wonder why we don't synch up?"
Rails beamed at her. "Yeah, then we could get matching tees saying 'Tough shit, Rambo!' "
Aggie waggled a finger. "That would get us labelled as a couple."
Lori looked at her. "I think people already think we're a couple."
Aggie felt her heart skip. "I know. Does that bother you?"
Lori sighed. "No, not as much as the fact that half the men are dead already."
Aggie stole a look at Lori. Lori must've felt it, and as she met the gaze, their eyes locked for an instant.
Lori nodded. "If we die out here, we'll probably die like that, I imagine, in each others' arms."
Aggie felt a bit sad at the thought. "Is that so bad?"
Lori thought for a second. "Truth?"
Aggie felt nervous. "Truth."
"If we knew we we're gonna buy it, right now ... " Rails, stuck for words.
Aggie slid over beside her. "It's okay, we're pretty clear how we feel, I think."
Lori was crying a little. "My big regret would be I was too stupid and old school to ... just ... to let myself fall into you."
Aggie was stunned by that, a smile coming to her face unexpectedly. "Wow! I thought it was gonna be more like 'yeah, I'd do you if we were dying, why not?' "
Lori looked at her, tears drying up. "Don't think you never cross my mind, you do." She pulled her legs up onto the bed, her own heart pounding.
Aggie's smile was surviving, realizing Rails was moving to her. "You cross my mind too much, that's my problem."
Lori knelt on the bed and pulled Aggie's face around by her chin. Her voice was soft now. "No, I don't want you to think that ... "
Mouths moved too slowly to get to the soft, enveloping kiss.
Before lips met, the squawk box lit up.
"This is L5R Mission Control. Flight reports and Command & Control confirms we have found the Nagas Rift! I repeat, Flight reports and Command & Control confirms we have found the Rift. All Comms Units relay down the line and confirm. TAC is in SitRoom at this time and all Pod Commanders are to report to stations 0500 for TAC Briefing. This is L5R Mission Control out."
