Detective Jennifer Colavito's work and bed partner was sitting across from her. Her dog Max had shown no interest in learning vox skills and her parents were dead.
This strange noise coming from the vox in her pocket, therefore, presumably meant space had its first homicide.
Stephen Raitt smiled at her. "You gonna answer, or are you playing hard to get?"
She snapped out of it. "Got it." She pulled it out, said "Detective Colavito.", then listened intently, a scowl growing as the tale unfolded.
She motioned for Raitt to get ready to roll.
He was cheered at the prospect of doing some real police work.
She finally ended her call, civilly enough, scarcely having said a word.
Raitt placed her gun, badge & extra ammo clips on her desk. He watched her face. "Wassup?"
"Remember we used to talk about that one big nightmare case that would make or break us?"
His face grew serious. "This is it?"
She had her weapons and ID ready. She looked at him, remembering love with him 12 hours ago. "I think it just might be."
Raitt nodded at the phone. "Who was that? Boyette or Segretti?"
"Erhard."
Raitt seemed taken aback. "Commander Erhard from the Air Force?"
"One and the same."
Raitt still looked a bit at sea. "I thought their MPs handled their stuff."
She looked at him a little sadly. "By the sounds of it, this isn't their stuff."
Raitt was a good cop. "Ok, let's get on it. Where do we go."
Colavito was still seated, checking her scene kit. "We don't. We get an Air Force MP escort."
Raitt leaned across and spoke quietly. "What the hell is up with this, Jen?"
She sighed, leaned forward and said it softly. "This promises to be the first of many."
Stephen said nothing, but tossed an extra pack of latex gloves into his own kit bag.
