Tavakh looked at Taris in her corporeal form. Such a young spirit to be watching through this mirror, on this day of all days.
Tavakh's secret weapon was that most others didn't think he took things seriously. Melakt knew Tavakh's power was derived by virtue of his being easy to dismiss.
Tavakh Aldebaran was a Stealth spirit.
"Will you be all right, Sorrel?"
She was looking at an empty room so far. "Ahm okay, Tavi. Ah jess dunno quaht whut tuh expect." She turned her head and looked up at him. "Whut wuz thuh lass one lahk?"
He smiled at her. "It was significantly less dramatic. The population was less, there was far less progress, no technology, no full scale wars." His smile vanished. "I'm afraid I'm not much more prepared than you are."
She nodded, so wise beyond her cycles. "And this tahm iss the women ..." Her voice trailed away.
They hadn't heard Melakt enter. "It was the women once before, millions of years ago by their reckoning." He sighed. "Women are more pragmatic and ruthless. War has none of the homo-erotic romance for women as it does for men."
Taris had turned and moved to rise, stayed by the movement of his left front hoof. "Thank you for coming."
Melakt peered into the vacant room beyond the glass. "Tavakh and I are here for you now, but when the doors open and their assembly is joined, Taris Sajel Sorrel, you will be on your own with your first judgement."
Taris made a barely perceptible movement of her head. "Ah unnerstan." She glanced gratefully at Tavakh. "Tavi has explained thuh consequences minny times, in great detail."
"Trillions of manifesting spirits will suffer the terror of death." Melakt said it softly, as if it diminished the agony.
"Ah know." Taris nodded her minute little nod, her voice barely audible.
The door beyond the mirror opened, and an attractive blonde woman walked in, alone.
Taris grinned and made her odd little nasal sound. "That wunt so bayud."
Tavakh and Melakt looked at her, baffled.
Taris had taken two steps toward the tunnel. She turned back to face them as if it were all so obvious. "Look at her! Feel her spirit! There's no need for me at all."
She stepped back towards her spirit family, looking first at Melakt, then Tavakh, finally looking through the mirror again. "See? Kinda hot for an Avenging Spirit, ah would imagine."
She peered more closely at the mirror.
"Really nice jacket!"
