Melf's eyes had grown large during the announcement. He dressed hurriedly, suit, tie, the works.
He opened the door.
Battle was right there, apparently about to knock.
"If you'll forgive the rudeness, Mr. Secretary, may I ask why you weren't at the briefing?" He poked Melf's sternum. "This is a military operation, and you have an obligation to attend as a representative of the people."
Melf's height disadvantage had him off-balance and spluttering. "I ..."
Battle scowled, then raised both eyebrows, holding up the storage stick conspicuously.
"I apologize, General. I'll get this to the President A S A P."
Battle backed off a bit and handed Melf the stick. "That's what you'll need for the President."
"Thank you."
Battle simply walked away.
When Melf got back inside, his Vox was buzzing. Richardson.
"Nice work, Egon, great spin on the announcement too."
Melf recovered his aplomb with disturbing ease. "Thank you, Mr. President. There were no real decisions to be made."
"Nonetheless, well done, Egon. Good night."
"Good night, Mr. President."
Melf lay down on his bed in his suit, with his shoes on. He doubted sleep would come.
It didn't.
