nerves on nerves
Aggie Brooks looked with some concern at Leon Freedman in his bed. "You still strung out, Leon?"
"Cain't stop flickin'. Cain't sleep."
Lori Railsback still had the note in her hand, and was also watching Leon carefully. To Aggie she said "We need to go stronger, get him to sleep."
Aggie agreed. "We have some Dalmane somewhere in this mess."
"I found Imovane. That should do it, don't you think?"
Both MedTechs turned to see Suzanne behind them, a bottle in hand.
Lori smiled at her. "Just the thing. Is this you exhibiting drug-seeking behavior?" She said it cordially enough.
Suzanne was cool. "I'd be inclined to put it down to a high degree of sorely-needed organizational skill."
Lori raised her eyebrows and said nothing.
Aggie was just grateful to see the pills. "How be you give Mr. Freedman here one of those right now?" She patted Suzanne on the shoulder. "Good thing one of us is organized."
Lori was waving the note. "I need to talk to you stat."
Suzanne picked up a clean glass, rinsed it out in the sink, dried it and brought the pills and water back to Leon's bedside.
Aggie smiled approvingly at Suzanne. "Thanks."
Suzanne returned the smile. "You're welcome. I need something to keep me occupied while we're waiting on Chaindance."
Aggie nodded. "I hear that." She looked at Lori. "What do we need to talk about?" She grinned, as if she had an idea or two of her own.
"Out here." Lori vanished behind the curtain to the triage area.
Suzanne dispensed a single pill and closed the bottle. She called after Aggie's disappearing figure. "Tell Rails I miss her already."
She turned back to Leon. "Okay, Mr. Freedman, I want to give you something to help you sleep."
Leon grunted something unintelligible, but co-operated anyway.
Beyond the curtain, Aggie looked at Rails. "What is it with you and Suzanne?"
Lori thrust the note at her. "Read this. My problem is I have a strange feeling I've seen her before someplace or a picture of her, something odd ..." She shook her head. "I know we need the help, but ..." She took a breath. "There's more to her than meets the eye."
Aggie looked at the note. "And what am I supposed to make of this? Why is Stormer so interested in Leon Freedman?"
Lori managed to look both grim and smug at the same time. "He said he was doing some research on him. But given Leon's here at all, it's still an interesting question, isn't it?"
"You think Leon was an experiment of Stormer's?" Aggie looked aghast. "I mean, Dr, Stormer's a bit odd, but I don't see him as The Mad Scientist, do you?"
"I don't know, but I think I'm happier Leon's tucked away safe in bed behind our curtain until we have a straight answer." She looked at the curtain as if it would be helpful. "Assuming we don't have an Angel Of Death looking after him already."
"Oh, please!" Aggie looked irritated. "I think she's nervous before ChainDance, she seems to know what she's doing and frankly, right now, she's all we've got. You think she's a serial murderer and Stormer's Dr. Frankenstein. Do we have any Xanax?"
"Yeah, in the cupboard." She got up on the little three-step ladder to open the door. "How many you want?"
"None." Aggie was scowling. "But I think you should take a couple."
Lori pursed her lips. She turned, catching Aggie looking at her legs from behind.
Their eyes met, Aggie blushed and Rails burst out laughing. "Very tricky!" She wagged her finger at Aggie and stepped to the ground, her smile fading as Aggie's grew into a lusty grin.
Lori looked wistful. "I guess this is how it begins, huh?"
Aggie's smile disappeared. "Yeah, always."
"It just aches?"
Aggie nodded a little sadly. "Yeah, it doesn't stop."
Lori cast her eyes up into Aggie's. "When did you know you wanted me?"
Aggie looked miserable. "Day one."
Lori looked sad and moved towards her, her palms moving to Aggie's chest above her breasts. Aggie leaned forward just a little, and Rails arms slid up around her neck. The embrace was shameless, sensual, gentle, and the kiss was so sweet and soft as Aggie's strong arms took their willing prisoner.
When the kiss ended, their bodies were one, their foreheads touching, their eyes seeing each other in a new way, soft mounds crushed together between them, Lori letting herself be swept into Aggie's heart, lips suddenly moving around each other's mouths a lot.
The bells went off, low, yet urgent in their ears.
"Buzzkill." Aggie Brooks, mistress of the understatement.
Lori was very red. "I think I was going to cum."
"We should get that."
Lori picked up her voxbox irritably. "This is Rails, what do you want?" She clicked off, slipping back to the old Rails reluctantly. "Coronary, wheel 1, Pod 37."
Aggie swore. "We'll never make it." She called out "Suzanne, we gotta go!" and the two MedTechs got the gurney and crash cart moving.
Suzanne's voice came back through the curtain. "Go on, I think Leon and I are getting along fine." To Leon she muttered "I don't know who was breathing hardest, you or them."
Leon grunted.
Suzanne nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that's how I feel about it, too."
Lori called back "We won't be long, I don't think."
Aggie looked at her as they headed out through the swinging doors. "She's not an Angel Of Death."
"Can't be certain, right?" Rails turned on the crowd assembled for the launch broadcast and yelled out her mantra of the day. "MOVE IT, PEOPLE, MAKE A HOLE!"
Aggie shook her head and pushed the cart towards the transportation tube.
Halfway to the tubes, the bells stopped.
Lori picked up the handset, listened and clicked off. "M.E. is picking him up."
Aggie dropped her head. "Crap." They turned the gurney around.
Rails sighed. "Godspeed, whoever you were."
"Cain't stop flickin'. Cain't sleep."
